Practically Well rates the Bond films #11 Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace is the twenty-second in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions. The film stars Daniel Craig as Bond, alongside Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Giancarlo Giannini, Jeffrey Wright, and Judi Dench. In the film, Bond teams with Camille Montes (Kurylenko) to stop Dominic Greene (Amalric) from monopolizing the Bolivian freshwater supply. The film received mixed reviews, with praise for Craig’s performance and the action sequences but was deemed inferior to its predecessor, Casino Royale. It grossed $589 million worldwide, becoming the seventh highest-grossing film of 2008 and the fourth highest-grossing James Bond film.

That was pretty succinct. Now on to the ratings;

Bond; 89 out of 100 Daniel Craig does good work, but nothing new or different from Casino Royale. Kind of standing still in terms of development. But still good stuff.

Villain- 87 out of 100 Mathieu Amalric is an excellent actor and does the best with what he is given. However he’s not necessarily scary or dark. More calculating than evil. And his fight with Bond at the end is unconvincing.

Bond Girls. 88 out of 100. Olga Kurylenko as Camille Montes is, first, Ukrainian playing Bolivian, which I didn’t really buy. She’s gorgeous, but plays against her looks which I understand as a choice, but doesn’t enhance her Bond girl persona. Gemma Arterton as Strawberry Fields is a real plus, as she embraces both the sexy and the smart.

Theme. 61 out of 75. “Another Way to Die” is the 1st Bond theme collab, with Alicia Keys and Jack White. Nice, but neither iconic or inspiring.

Henchman. 41 out of 50. Naming Joaquín Cosío’s General Medrano a henchman is a bit of a stretch, but he is nicely evil and appears throughout the piece.

M, Q, Moneypenny, etc. 25 out of 25. Lots to like here. Judy Dench, Jeffery Wright, David Harbour, Rory Kinnear and Giancarlo Giannini, for heaven’s sake.

Total- 391
