The Man with the Golden Gun is the ninth in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions, and the second to star Roger Moore. It was the fourth and final film in the series directed by Guy Hamilton. The film also reflects the then-popular martial arts film craze, with several kung fu scenes and a predominantly Asian location, being set and shot in Thailand, Hong Kong, and Macau. The film has Bond sent after the Solex Agitator, a breakthrough technological solution to contemporary energy shortages, while in a game of cat and mouse facing the assassin Francisco Scaramanga, (Christopher Lee) the “Man with the Golden Gun”. The action culminates in a duel between them that settles the fate of the Solex.
OK, on to the ratings;
Bond- 86 out of 100 Roger Moore’s Bond is funnier and more light-hearted than any other actor who portrayed the character, which is not necessarily my cup of tea. But he does a nice job here of getting his version of Bond on.
Villain- 96 out of 100. It’s Christopher Lee, people. Real life spy, 70’s Dracula icon, swinging 60’s provocateur. And he does good work as a foil for Moore’s Bond.
Bond Girls- 67 out of 100. Britt Eklund is cute, but oh so empty headed in this. And Maud Adams as Scaramonga’s girl is just kinda there. Sexier than either in a cameo is Francoise Therry as Chew Mee, the assistant to a warlord who has a brief “nude” pool scene and Carmen Sautoy as Saida, a Beirut belly dancer.
Theme- 28 out of 75 . Singer Lulu’s Theme song is a great example of really bad 70’s pop. I’ll leave it there.
Henchman- 46 out of 50. Hervé Villechaize as Nick Nack is an icon of Bond henchman . Memorable, quirky , thick accent. What else could you want?
M, Q, Moneypenny, etc. – 8 out of 25. Not much to mention really.
